Medium Bob Hairstyles

bob medium hairstyles

Medium length bobs are ALWAYS in style! You can catch them on so many celebs right now including Katie Holmes (who looks smokin’ hot and sultry in her bob), Rihanna – so fabulous!, Michelle Williams, Selma Blair, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the ever popular Victoria Beckham. This is just a short list of celebrities that are paving the way with their trendy medium length bobs. So how do you choose which one is right for you?

Blunt, Choppy Bob – This bob can have a severe look or be flirty. It depends entirely on how you want it to look. Your stylist will cut the back in one solid line then add in choppy layers. You can wear it slick or straight, curly or wavy, chunky or smooth. It’s a really versatile style that can change with your mood.
A-Line Bob – This popular bob is best displayed by celeb vixens Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) and Katie Holmes. The back is cut up to your hairline in the nape area then it gets longer toward the front on one side or both. The benefit of this style is that you get to keep some length in front to frame out your face. You can rock it with no bangs like Mrs. Beckham or have some bangs cut in like Katie. Either way, this style is a winner.

Wispy Bob – This style is low maintenance and grows out well. It looks great with some natural curl or straightened with the ends pieced out. Because the layers are light, you can get a lot of volume on top for a more punk look or even a formal look. It offers a lot of variety and has a softer feel to it than the other styles.
Layers… How do you know how many to get? The texture of your hair will help to determine this one, but also the overall shape you decide to go when discussing it with your stylist. If you have a ton of hair, you may want to have heavier layers. If your hair is on the fine side, you will probably opt for less.
The amount of layering throughout the style will change the shape of the style, so make sure to discuss that with the stylist before they start cutting. Talk about your face shape and where the layers should lay to draw attention to facial features you like or away from features you don’t. They can always add more layers, but once it’s cut, you just have to wait for it to grow back. Taking a picture in with you for your consultation will really help your stylist know which direction to take. It helps them know what your expectations are for your bob.

Bangs With Your Bob - Let’s face it, the bob is super cute with or without them. It’s totally a personal choice when it comes to the bang option. Try it without, then if it’s styled and you really want them, it’s easy enough for the stylist to add them in for you.
Styling Options - What do you use to style the bob? It depends on your mood and your time limit!

For a soft and full look, use a volumizing mousse when your hair is damp, then dry upside down while lightly scrunching with your hands or a diffuser. Flip it back up and tousle it and you’re done!
For a more flirty look, add product meant for straightening and flip the layers out just a tiny bit. Pull a little pomade or styling wax through the ends to make them a little more piecy.

For a formal event, use the volumizing mousse again, but this time dry it with a round brush for soft volume, then use a large barrel curling iron in the ends all the way around.

The bob is a fantastic cut because it’s mostly foolproof. You can style it in tons of different ways in a very little time. Make sure to get regular trims to keep the ends fresh and looking healthy and you can’t really go wrong with this style!
