Preventing Split Ends Important to Shoulder Skimming Hair
Having a sassy shoulder length cut will put a spring in your step, but let it go for too long and your great hair days will turn into hair nightmares! Maintaining the health of your hair is vital to having a great hair day almost every day. There are a few key steps to making sure your hair stays fresh.
First, make regular appointments with your stylist to get your favorite style trimmed. Before you leave the salon take a minute to set up your next appointment. You’ll more than likely get the time and date you want if you do it this way, so that’s a bonus! Your stylist should be able to gauge how quickly your hair is growing after a few visits and can tell you when you should come back to keep the style you love. For some, you will need to get back in the stylists’ chair in four weeks. Others can wait up to six. Waiting any longer than this can lead to greater breakage in your ends, so make the effort to keep your appointment.
Moisture retention is another key element when trying to combat the split end debacle. You may find that even though you put tons of conditioner on your hair when you shower, it’s still starchy feeling, static-y and dry. If you don’t have a soft water system in your home, this may be the cause. Minerals in hard water (from the city or even well water) will deposit themselves on your hair and deter the moisturizing particles in your conditioner from getting into your hair shaft. Invest in a quality clarifying shampoo and pick a day of the week. Mine is Sunday. So every Sunday when I wash my hair, I use a clarifying shampoo to strip those minerals out. Don’t forget to shampoo right after with your regular shampoo, then condition as usual. You will find that your hair is less brassy, less starchy feeling, you’ll get rid of most of the static going on, and it will feel fabulous instead of dry. Making sure your hair is receiving the moisturizing elements in your hair care products will go a long way in maintaining the health of your ends.
Still have issues with dry, split ends? Go to a salon and get a deep conditioning treatment. This not only helps your hairs’ moisture content, but is also a great way to splurge on yourself! It’s relaxing for you and will make your hair feel super luxurious. There are deep conditioning treatments that you can do at home, and that’s okay, but there’s nothing quite like having someone else put all that attention into making your hair feel fabulous.
Hot tools. You know you use them and you love how they make your hair look. Blow drying, flat ironing, curling irons, hot rollers… all these things that make your hair look polished can also dry out and damage your hair. Use a product on your hair that is specifically made for prepping the hair for hot tools. The product will help protect your hair from all that heat by coating the hair shaft so the hot tool isn’t burning off the natural moisture in your hair.
Texture. Everyone’s hair has a completely different texture, and yours may be the cause of your split ends. The best thing you can do to deal with your special texture of hair is to ask a stylist what they recommend for it, then buy it and use it! Don’t try to fight what you’ve got. Work with it and you will have much better results.
The bottom line is this: if you want to keep your hair fresh and sexy, then take care of it. Once you get into the routine it will become second nature to you and your hair will be forever grateful. |
